What is a spouse visa?

Spouse Visas are also known as Marriage Visas.

If you are married or in a civil partnership with a UK citizen or a permanent resident then provided both of you are over 21 and meet the relevant Spouse Visa requirements the non UK spouse may apply for a UK Spouse Visa. A permanent resident is somebody who is allowed to live in the UK with no time limit on their stay.

Your dependent children can also be included on your Spouse Visa applications.

It is very important that your spouse applies for a spouse visa before travelling to the UK. If you are not yet married and intend to bring your unmarried partner to join you, then you will need to make UK Fiancé visa application.

Spouse visas are normally granted for two year periods. Once this two year period has expired the spouse can then apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), which is commonly known as permanent residency in the UK.

Once a spouse visa has been granted then in addition to being able to stay in the UK for the period of the spouse visa the other major benefit is that the spouse can look for and undertake any work he/she wants. There is no restriction on the types of work which can be done.
